Chuck, 48, a busy psychotherapist, had sudden excruciating pain in his right upper abdomen. There had been a family history of gallbladder disease. Three or four homeopathic remedies were tried with no effect. One of them even aggravated the pain every time he took it during the attack. He had appalling pain, causing him to writhe on the floor and lasting four hours. He lost eighteen pounds in two months.

Ultrasound showed multiple small gallstones in his gallbladder, and signs of inflammation. The gastroenterologist recommended laparoscopic surgery. However Chuck did not like the idea of having his gall bladder removed.

“Can I wait till they all pass?” he had asked the doctor.

The doctor had responded dryly, “Sure, if you wish to be in pain for the next ten years.”

Chuck was used to pain. But he had never experienced this level of it.  Yet he was of the belief that removing an organ should be a last resort. In spite of his pain, he insisted on continuing to try homeopathic treatment.

A “big gallbladder flush” and “daily small flushes” (significant quantities of grapefruit juice and olive oil) had no effect. By then, he had lost another twenty pounds and his friends began to fear the worst.

One weekend he had an attack while at the beach that caused vomiting and lasted nearly ten hours. He was on the verge of being hospitalized. Sometime later he revealed he had considerable frustration at his work, much suppressed anger, but Staphysagria did not improve. Two to three more remedies were tried to no avail.

Another time, Natrum muriaticum, followed within one half hour with Hepar sulfuris calcareum caused a synergistic effect. Deep-seated emotions regarding his work as a therapist came to the forefront, causing him to sob for a half hour. Afterwards, he was calm and relaxed and felt he had a new lease on life. However, this undoubtedly valuable healing experience failed to prevent the next gallstone colic. By now, he had at least one attack a day, usually in the morning, but sometimes even a second one in the evening.

One day, during a follow-up consultation, I asked him to once again describe the nature of his pain. There was a peculiar feature of his discomfort before the colics started he had somehow never mentioned. He described a sensation in his liver region as if a small object the size of a pea slipped from right to left. Carduus marianus had this symptom. He took Carduus marianus once daily in a Q-potency, and every ten minutes during the attack. He found the dose during the attack would improve the pain instantly and completely the stop the colic after two or three doses.

Within two weeks of taking Carduus marianus daily, Chuck noticed his attacks reduced in frequency. On a trip to Europe he had an attack while on the plane which responded quickly to a few doses of Carduus. He had another mild attack while in Europe that lasted only minutes after taking a dose of Carduus. He felt a sensation as if he would develop gallstone colic on the return trip, but after a dose of Carduus, and it never developed into a full-scale attack. He had one last brief colic, again relieved by Carduus, on the day of his return. With this last attack his gallstone colics stopped completely. This was July 1^st, 2000. Six months later there had not been a single attack. Since he was curious if the stones were really gone, he decided to have another sonogram. The utrasound was conducted on January 29^th, 2001.

The physician performing the sonogram said, “There are no gallstones. But I can see clearly that there is considerable scar tissue, indicating you could have had gallstones over a long time but passed them.” She seemed skeptical at first when he told her about the colics. When she heard he managed entirely without painkillers she commented admiringly, “You must be a tough S.O.B.”

That was eight years ago. Chuck continued to take Lycopodium in Q-potencies for another two years. He has not had another gallstone colic since. And he kept his gallbladder!

He looked older than his fifty-nine years, with grey-white hair and wrinkled skin. Bill had worked for the local government as tax assessor, but had retired early because of his illness. He seemed withdrawn, as if profoundly depressed, and despite his regular habit of dressing in a suit and tie, he had disheveled and unkempt look.

We first saw Bill on January 31, 2001. He had already seen two neurologists. The diagnosis? Neurological exams confirmed the physical signs of Parkinson’s, although MRI and CT scans were not conclusive. However the two neurologists made the diagnosis independently of another.

Bill had first noticed some intention tremor in his late forties but thought nothing of it. Gradually over the next ten years he developed tightness of the muscles in arms and difficulty with certain tasks, such as operating his lawn mower. His arm muscles became quite painful and stiff. He also had some “strange vision symptoms” (as he relayed), including a floating spot in his field of vision. All of this contributed greatly to a certain amount of anxiety and Bill feeling profoundly hopeless. Fortunately, his medical interventions were limited to pain medication – at his insistence.

At our initial consultation, his facial muscles appeared somewhat rigid but by no means noticeable to the casual observer. Bill’s speech was normal, however slow. He appeared absent-minded. He had difficulty focusing, and had the habit of picking on his sweater or jacket. His general characteristics fit what in homeopathy we call the “cancer diathesis” – a distinct psychophysical syndrome found in those with a family history or history of cancer.

In exploring Bill’s health history we found a mouth-full of (14) mercury amalgam dental fillings (the silver ones), most had been there since childhood, and many of them quite corroded. He had a history of rheumatic fever in early childhood. He had routine flu shots over past five years, which could have triggered the onset of the illness, and tetanus shots several times over the years. He had a history of grief: his wife had died ten years ago of cancer, and he had remained unmarried.

The plan was to replace mercury amalgam fillings; mercury detoxification (with oral chelation); clearing for the secondary long-term effects of medications, vaccines and for toxins like round-up and other pesticides he’d been exposed to. The homeopathic treatment would commence with Duboisinum in 30C potency (the only potency I could find; I’d have preferred using ascending Q-potencies, to cover the neurological symptoms, alternating with Natrum muriaticum, in the ascending Q-potencies, addressing the state of grief. Additionally he eliminated the use of cell and cordless phones as they are also known to cause or aggravate neurological symptoms and they interfere with the efficacy of homeopathic treatment.

At the first three week follow-up, we noted good improvement in his depression, and even some improvement in his stiffness and muscle pain, although he had a brief aggravation during the clearing of the tetanus shot for which we switched from drop dosing to olfactory (sniff) and the aggravation subsided. The amalgam removal went smoothly according to our protocol, however it took nearly eight months to finish. Half—seven—were replaced in first two weeks, the rest were done in three subsequent sessions. There was a lot of dental restoration to do. An oral detoxification regimen with cilantro and chlorella was done religiously. Over next six months we noticed no more improvement in the neurological symptoms, although he was clearly more motivated and talked about his possible recovery for the first time.  After almost three months of clearing (RCT protocol) Carcinosinum in ascending Q-potencies was added, given in alternation with the other two daily remedies. Four months later Duboisinum was dropped and switched to Plumbum metallicum in ascending Q-potencies because of recurrent muscle pain and several other symptoms that indicated it. Over next few months there was some good improvement in pain and muscle tightness.

By end of 2002, the good news was, there had not been any progression of the disease, but only modest improvement so far. Muscle rigidity had improved but tremors had increased, especially in the right hand. In a moment of despair Bill even complained he was back to where he started. However, we informed him that, according to Hering’s Law, this was a good sign, as it could mean a reversal of symptoms. He had a hard time with this view, and undoubtedly thought we were merely trying to cheer him up. But this is not uncommon during homeopathic treatment of chronic disorders. The disorder must be literally reversed to its origins before it can dissipate.

The return of old symptoms warranted a new remedy: Agaricus muscarius (again, in ascending Q-potencies) and this seemed to improve the hand tremor noticeably. However, the progress again plateaued a few months later, as general frustration with old memories and bitterness became again more pronounced. Bill recalled the frustration of his wife’s ordeal with cancer treatment, which lasted five years before she died, and his anger at the doctors and even at God, with subsequent despair. His silent grief had kept him from considering a new relationship. Additionally, he reluctantly confirmed a problem he had only hinted at earlier in the treatment. He was a religions man and he had remained celibate, and it had been difficult at times. This deep-seated frustration could have been the obstacle that prevented the Agaricus from achieving its full effect.

It was an indication for Conium. He took it in lieu of the Agaricus in standard daily doses and got generalized improvement in his mental and physical state. He started to groom himself again. He looked and appeared more at ease now and his muscle tightness improved. This was followed eight months later by Aurum metallicum when irregular heart beat and fleeting joint pains reminiscent of those that remained after his childhood rheumatic fever reappeared. Could the old streptococcal infection be kept in place to protect against cell-death caused by mercury as Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt theorized?

Now two and a half years into homeopathic treatment and mercury detox protocol, Bill was taking daily doses of Q-potencies of Natrum muriaticum, Aurum and Carcinosinum in alternation. This was joined by Hepar sulphuricum, Hahnemann’s great mercury antidote, given in low decimal potency, after he noticed that nightly leg pains, salivation and drooling, night sweats appeared. Since these are strong mercury symptoms he had to make an adjustment in his mercury detox protocol, reducing the speed of his chelation. He reduced the amount of cilantro taken to one half teaspoon per day. Over the next six months, the above remedies along with the mercury detox regimen completed the recovery. By January 2004 he was free from neurological symptoms. There has not been a recurrence of the symptoms since.

It takes a minimum of three years to detox mercury and a minimum of four to five years when it is the cause of a neurological disorder. In this case the homeopathic treatment resolved the condition before the mercury was completely removed, however, I would have preferred for BIll to remain in treatment and doing mercury chelation for at least another 18 months.

AS: In 1990 you developed Reverse Chronological Tautopathy (RCT). Can you define and describe that method briefly?

MM: “RCT was developed in response to a growing need to remove the effects of drugs, vaccines, diagnostic and therapeutic X-ray/radiation and environmental and occupational exposures. I’d seen that children who’d been given multiple vaccines had lingering symptoms that were not part of their constitutional picture. This included a recollection of people’s childhood and upbringing as compared to how they are now. I saw something similar present in many chronic disorders, where the client had a history of conventional medical treatment. When you take a thorough case and recognize that the basic characteristics a person was born with dramatically changed after suppressive medication, it is logical that these syndromes must be removed for a real constitutional picture to emerge.

I always felt it was necessary, especially when it comes to chronic disease, to have a thorough history of the evolution of the disease. I saw that symptoms often developed after medications and/or medical treatments were used. I found that these symptoms were listed among the chronic effects of those medications and treatments! For example, one child who was given prednisone for a year had Cushing’s syndrome. I tried Prednisone 30c and within a few weeks, the Cushing’s syndrome was gone! In a mental patient who’d been treated with antipsychotic medication, antidoting the drug with “Stelazine” in potency rapidly cured his tardive dyskinesia.

I was taught that homeopathy addressed the whole patient, rather than the disorder, but I found that many classical era homeopaths did not share this view. I discovered that even Hahnemann didn’t treat the constitution, but simply matched remedies to the totality of the disease picture. In the Organon (6th) he even refers to several diseases co-existing in the same patient simultaneously. Hahnemann also realized that the most recent conditions needed to be removed, before older ones could be addressed. I came to the conclusion that many modern patients with complex chronic disorders, present with multiple artificially induced disorders. These disorders can often be traced back to a cause, when you take a careful chronological history. So I don’t just use RCT, I use reverse chronological treatment, period.

The young gentleman in his early thirties was a little self-conscious about his looks.  He had been plagued by severe acne of the face, a condition diagnosed as tuberous acne, although one could argue that is was really cystic acne. You could see significant acne scaring over both his cheeks, chin and all over his face, even the nose. He was otherwise in excellent health. He kept in excellent physical shape with regular yoga exercises and an all organic, vegetarian diet.

He had come to America with his family from the Punjab region of India.  His father, while keeping up his ties to the Sikh community, had raised him to observe a deeply religious life, however outside of the constraints of any organized religion. Though raised in the Sikh religion, he was dressed in comfortable Western clothing and attended regular Krishnamurti dialogues.

“I have had this ever since puberty. I break out in regular intervals, about once a month.”

Homeopathy is a scientific medical treatment that takes the whole person into account in selecting a suitable medicine. During a consultation the homeopath also explores if any emotional or psychological symptoms that may accompany a complaint.

“Have you noticed any relationship with the acne symptoms and your state of mind?” I questioned.

He did not see any connection. Even after exploring the minor stresses he suffered in his life there was nothing to tell that would be of interest.

We explored in-detail the type of pimples he would get. They erupted about once a month, coming to a head, with whitish pus forming, then receding without suppurating. After they healed they left an ugly scar.

His health history was uneventful. Unlike most Americans who suffer from acne, he had never attempted any of the risky suppressive drugs. For example, Accutane, a common acne drug offered by conventional dermatologists, can lead to organ damage and psychosis.

In his case, one significant symptom was the regularity with which the acne appeared.  Given its onset at puberty and regular monthly appearance suggested a hormonal link, something quite common with acne.

I questioned further. After taking his whole case I considered Silica or Calcarea silicata likely remedies. He had already tried Silica as part of a low decimal potency combination remedy, marketed as “Schuessler cell salt”. While it had helped somewhat, it never significantly improved the condition.

Sometimes remarks beginning with “by the way” or the things saved till the end of a consultation that provide the most significant clues for the homeopath.

Our conversation finally came around to his sex life, an area that was avoided so far. He had a healthy sex drive however he was not sexually active. He was unmarried and felt the internal conflict presented by natural sexual energies and his objection to masturbation. He felt a physical sexual pressure that increased gradually over a period of about a month and would finally come to a climax in a nightly emission, often accompanied by erotic dreams. The following day his face would erupt with acne and he was left feeling somewhat despondent and weak.

I chose Kali bromatum, a remedy that has a link to ailments arising from lack of sexual fulfillment.  In the homeopathic materia medica, Kali bromatum lists “pustular acne” and the following characteristic symptoms:

• “nocturnal emissions, with amorous dreams and erections.”
• “nocturnal emissions and nervous disturbances growing out of unsatisfied sexual desire.”

The next consultation confirmed that there had been almost no outbreak of acne. After several months of Kali bromatum in gradually increasing decimal potencies the acne disappeared completely and permanently. Years later, he credits his homeopathic treatment with his permanent recovery.

Now, Carl sounded confused, disoriented, worried, and he was babbling, something about that he had to get back to his job. It took some active listening on my part to learn that he was calling from Duke Medical Center (Durham, NC, USA), where he had been hospitalized with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF for short).

RMSF is a tick-borne disease caused by the bacteria Rickettsia rickettsii spread by bites from the American Dog Tick. Initial signs and symptoms of the disease include sudden onset of fever, headache, and muscle pain, vomiting, headache, lack of appetite, followed by development of petechia-like (pinpoint) rash and abdominal and/or joint pain. It is a serious condition that has been known to be fatal in some cases.

Conventional medicine usually treats RMSF with Doxycycline therapy to kill the bacteria. Doxycycline is in the tetracycline group of antibiotics and considered a broad spectrum antibiotic. It is interesting to note that Doxycycline can have symptoms such as urine retention, jaundice and yellowing of the skin, fever, chills and joint pains, confusion, severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate and so many more. Most people don’t suffer from all of these side effects, but you can see how for some people, the cure can be just as bad as the disease itself.

Back to the story: Carl muttered, “I’ve got to get out of here, they are killing me here, I gotta get out o’ here,” then handed the phone to his girlfriend who explained he had been delirious at times, while on antibiotics, Tylenol (acetaminophen/paracetamol) and a sedative. He had a terrible headache, and he was aching so badly all over his body that he could hardly move.

She picked up the remedy Bryonia alba 30C, Acetaminophenum 30C and Doxacyclinum 30C from my office. The next day, Carl and his girlfriend dropped by to express their gratitude for his miraculous cure. His fever had come down after one dose, and by the next day he was able to check himself out of the hospital.

Homeopathic medicine was able to provide a quick, effective and completely safe treatment to resolve this potentially life-threatening condition. I read in the paper a few days later that eleven people had succumbed to this disease so far that year in North Carolina while under the best of medical care!

Mueller’s observations on the predisposition to cancer come from over 25 years of taking cancer cases in his homeopathic practice. Mueller has observed that these same symptoms, disorders and psycho-physical tendencies are already found long before the cancer diagnosis – sometimes already in early childhood – in those with a “cancer diathesis” (predisposition). Cancer in the family history is not the only criteria!
